If you need a crown, you’ll likely choose between zirconia and porcelain. Both are tooth-colored. Both are strong. Both look great. But they have real tradeoffs depending on which tooth gets crowned and how your teeth come together.
Here’s the practical comparison.
Zirconia Crowns
Strengths
- Extremely durable — nearly impossible to chip or crack
- Best for back teeth where chewing forces are highest
- Good for grinders — resists wear from bruxism
- Available same-day — we mill in-office for qualifying cases
Tradeoffs
- Slightly less translucent than porcelain — doesn’t catch light quite as naturally
- Can wear opposing teeth if not polished properly — modern monolithic zirconia is much better at this
- Can’t be repaired if it ever does break
Porcelain Crowns
Strengths
- Most natural-looking — translucent, matches surrounding teeth perfectly
- Best for front teeth where appearance matters most
- Easier to color-match than zirconia
- Gentle on opposing teeth
Tradeoffs
- More fragile than zirconia — can chip under heavy chewing
- Not ideal for back molars in heavy chewers
- Sometimes needs a metal core (porcelain-fused-to-metal) for strength — that core can show as a gray line near the gumline
Quick Decision Guide
- Front tooth, smile zone: porcelain (or zirconia if you’re a grinder)
- Back tooth (premolar/molar): zirconia
- You grind your teeth: zirconia, anywhere in the mouth
- You want it done in one visit: zirconia (same-day available)
- Maximum natural appearance: porcelain
What We Recommend
At Madison Square Dental, we offer both. We typically recommend zirconia for back teeth and porcelain (or all-ceramic equivalents) for front teeth in the smile zone. We’ll evaluate your specific case — bite, tooth location, color match, budget — and recommend what makes the most sense for you.
Same-day zirconia crowns are $899 as a current special. Call (817) 275-2229 or learn more about our crown services.
