Use It or Lose It: Making the Most of Your Dental Insurance Before Year-End

Published September 21, 2026

Every fall, thousands of Arlington families quietly leave hundreds of dollars of dental care on the table. Most dental insurance plans run on a calendar year: your annual maximum — the amount your plan will pay toward your care — resets on January 1, and whatever you have not used simply disappears. If you have been putting off a checkup, a filling, or a crown, the last three months of the year are the smartest time to schedule it.

How dental benefits actually work

Most PPO dental plans include three numbers worth knowing. The first is your annual maximum, commonly between $1,000 and $2,000 per person. The second is your deductible, usually $50–$150, which you may have already met earlier in the year. The third is your preventive coverage: most plans pay 100% of two cleanings and exams per year, no deductible required.

Here is the part many patients miss: if you already met your deductible this year, any restorative work you complete before December 31 is cheaper than the same work done in January, when the deductible resets. Waiting can literally cost you money twice — once in lost annual maximum, and again in a fresh deductible.

What to prioritize before December 31

1. Your second cleaning and exam. If you have only been in once this year (or not at all), this visit is typically fully covered. It is also how small problems get caught while they are still small.

2. Treatment you have already been diagnosed for. If we have recommended a filling, a crown, or a root canal and it is still on your to-do list, completing it now uses this year’s benefits. Larger treatment plans can often be split across December and January to use two years of annual maximums back to back.

3. Work that prevents bigger work. A small cavity treated today is a filling; the same cavity next summer can be a root canal and crown. Timing treatment before benefits reset is not just budgeting — it is genuinely better dentistry.

No insurance? You still have options

At Madison Square Dental we see many Arlington families without dental coverage. Our new patient special — exam, x-rays, and cleaning for $129 — makes it simple to get a clear picture of where you stand, and we offer free consultations and second opinions. From there, we will give you honest priorities: what needs attention now, what can wait, and what it will cost before anything begins.

Why patients choose Madison Square Dental

Our Arlington office has served the community for more than 40 years. Dr. Mansour Ahangarzadeh focuses on surgical and implant dentistry, Dr. Brijesh Patel provides general and family care, and Dr. Priyaben Patel leads our cosmetic services — so nearly any treatment your plan covers can be completed under one roof, without a referral across town. We also offer same-day emergency appointments when something cannot wait.

How to check your remaining benefits

You do not have to decode your policy alone. Call our front desk at (817) 275-2229 and we will verify your remaining annual maximum and deductible status directly with your insurance company, then help you schedule the visits that make the most of what you have already paid for. December appointment books fill quickly every year — the families who call in October get the times they want.

Common questions we hear every fall

Do unused benefits roll over? For the vast majority of PPO plans, no. A small number of plans offer a rollover feature, but it is the exception — and even those cap what carries forward. Assume December 31 is a hard deadline unless we verify otherwise for you.

Can I combine my benefits with the new patient special? Yes. If you have insurance, your preventive visits are usually covered outright, and the $129 special exists for patients without coverage. Either way, the first step is the same: a thorough exam and a straightforward conversation about what you actually need.

What if I need more work than my annual maximum covers? This is exactly where end-of-year timing shines. We can complete the first phase of treatment in November or December against this year’s maximum, then finish in January against next year’s — often cutting your out-of-pocket cost substantially. Our treatment coordinators map this out for you in writing before you commit to anything.

Does a flexible spending account (FSA) work the same way? FSA dollars are usually even stricter — most expire at year-end with no grace period. Dental treatment is an FSA-eligible expense, so an unused FSA balance is another reason to book before the calendar turns.

The bottom line

You have already paid for your dental benefits through every premium this year. Using them before December 31 is not an upsell — it is simply getting the value you purchased, at the moment it costs you the least. Whether it is the cleaning you have been meaning to schedule, the crown you have been putting off, or a second opinion on a treatment plan from another office, now is the time to put this year’s benefits to work.
