What is it?

The simplest, mildest sedation option.

Nitrous oxide - laughing gas - is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small nose mask during your procedure. It produces light euphoria, reduces anxiety, and slightly dulls discomfort, while keeping you fully awake and aware.

It works fast, wears off fast, and has no lingering effects - most patients drive themselves home afterward. Safe for kids and adults, with decades of clinical use behind it.

Why choose us

Why patients choose Laughing Gas.

Mild, safe anxiety relief

Takes the edge off without making you groggy. Great for patients with mild dental anxiety or sensitive gag reflex.

Fast on, fast off

Effects within 5 minutes of breathing in; clear within 5 minutes after switching to pure oxygen. No lingering grogginess.

You can drive home

Unlike oral or IV sedation, nitrous wears off so quickly you can drive yourself home and return to work.

Safe for kids

Well-studied in pediatric dentistry - a great option for anxious children before more involved sedation is considered.

Frequently asked

Laughing Gas questions, answered.

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What does laughing gas feel like?

Most patients describe it as a light, floaty, warm relaxation. Sometimes a tingling in fingers or toes. You stay fully aware - you can talk to us, hear instructions, and respond.

Will I actually laugh?

The "laughing" name is overstated. Most patients feel relaxed and pleasant, but uncontrolled laughter is rare. Some kids do giggle.

Are there side effects?

Rare, mild, and short-lived. Some patients feel briefly nauseated if they've eaten a heavy meal beforehand. We recommend a light meal 2 hours before, not a full one.

Is it safe?

Yes - nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for over 150 years with an excellent safety record. We monitor oxygen saturation throughout, and the gas is delivered with a minimum 30% oxygen mix.

Can I have nitrous oxide if I'm pregnant?

Generally not recommended in the first trimester. We discuss with your OB if you're pregnant - usually we'll defer non-urgent dental work until after delivery, or use no sedation if treatment is needed.
